If you want to create a logo or a simple design element, you might want to have a look at Dotgrid. This little utility gives you the possibility of creating vector-based designs without any kind of distractions. It lets you experiment with different line styles, control corners and change colors without relying on complicated tools and convoluted menus. It's ideal for simple, minimalistic designs, especially if you're short on time.

The application is free and open source, so you don't have to pay a dime. It works on any modern Windows system, and you can also find it as a web app. There is no need to go through an installation process, and there are no special requirements you have to meet, so you can start using the application right away.

Dotgrid comes with a compact user interface, but you can set it to full-screen mode if you need to. It consists mainly of a grid and a series of options, located on its lower edge. You can start drawing right away, by clicking the dots you want to connect, after which you have to click one of the aforementioned options to create a line between the dots.

When you connect the selected dots, you can choose between straight or curved lines. Regardless of what option you select, a straight line will appear between your dots, but the line of your choice will influence how your drawing will look when you manipulate it. You can click and drag the points you've selected and, depending on the option you chose, the lines with either bend or remain straight.

You can also find a few options for mirroring and flipping your drawing, which can be quite useful if you are looking to create a symmetrical design. You can also pick a different color, by specifying its code in the lower-right corner of the interface. When your work is done, you can save the project in the application's proprietary format, export it as an SVG file or render a PNG image.

With Dotgrid's minimalistic interface, it takes minimal effort to create vector-based logos or other designs.

Pros

The application has a clean and simple user interface, with straightforward controls. It lets you create vector-based designs with only a few clicks. It doesn't take up too much disk space, and it doesn't need to be installed.

Cons

You may feel a performance hit if you set the application's interface to full-screen mode.
